Small wedding venue in Bournemouth

Last updated: 8 October 2026

Ashbury Lounge is a small wedding venue on Bath Road in central Bournemouth. The function room seats 60, and there is no minimum number for a sit-down meal.

We only take one event a day.

Tell us your number and we will tell you how the room sets for it. Or call 01202 144484.

Your guest list

Is 40 or 50 guests a small wedding?

Yes. 40 or 50 guests is a small wedding, and it fits this room: the function room seats 60. Two numbers to plan with:

  • 60 seated. The most the function room seats.
  • No minimum. There is no headcount below which the kitchen will not serve a sit-down meal, so 20 or 30 guests can still sit down to a full meal.

So 40 or 50 sits comfortably inside the room, and past 60 you are planning a standing reception rather than a seated meal.

Our wedding venue page for central Bournemouth covers the full-size day. This page is for the smaller, seated one.

The legal step

Can we legally marry at Ashbury Lounge?

No … Ashbury Lounge holds no civil ceremony licence, so the legal ceremony takes place at the register office or another licensed venue first, and the meal and the celebration follow here on Bath Road.

Giving notice

How do we give notice of marriage in Bournemouth?

Before a civil ceremony you give formal notice at a register office. For a small wedding arranged quickly, these are the BCP Council rules to know:

  • When. Within 12 months of the ceremony and no later than 29 days before it. You must then hold the ceremony within 12 months of giving notice.
  • Who. You must have lived in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole for the past 7 full days. If you do not have settled status, the council asks you to fill out a separate form.
  • If one of you lives elsewhere. Partners in different registration districts give notice separately, each in their own district.

The 29 days matter most for a small wedding pulled together quickly: even a date you settle next week needs a month between notice and the ceremony.

Bournemouth's register office is at the BCP Civic Centre on Bourne Avenue, and you book the appointment through the council. The council's fees change, so check them on its notice page when you book. The notice rules above are as BCP Council stated them on 8 October 2026.

Dates

Which comes first, booking the room or giving notice?

Plan on booking a year or more ahead where you can. Notice cannot be given more than 12 months before the ceremony, so if you book the room further out than a year, the room comes first and the register office appointment follows once your date is inside that window.

A deposit secures the date, a further payment falls six months out and the balance six weeks before the day.

The day itself

How does a seated daytime wedding work in one room?

There is one function room and one bar, and each does a different job on the day:

  • Arrivals in the bar. The bar holds 30 and is step-free, so guests gather there before the meal.
  • The meal in the function room. It is up three small steps. Ask us about access when you enquire.
  • The tables, dressed your way. Decorate them yourselves, or our in-house person sets them up for you. Candles on the tables are fine.

Access the day before, to drop off decorations or hold a rehearsal, can be arranged as long as it is booked in ahead of time.

Catering is in-house, with halal available, and all drinks come through our own bar. If your day needs something the kitchen does not usually do, ask when you enquire.

Later in the day

What if more people are coming in the evening?

A small seated meal and a bigger evening do not need two venues. Evening guests can join in the same room, and our evening wedding receptions page covers how that part of the day runs.

Planning the party rather than the wedding? The celebrations page covers anniversaries and family occasions, and private venue hire explains how a booking works from enquiry to the day.

Common questions

Is 50 guests too small for a wedding?

No. The function room seats 60, so 50 fits inside it. There is no minimum number for a sit-down meal, so a smaller guest list is planned the same way as a bigger one.

Is 30 guests a small wedding?

Yes, and it works here. There is no minimum number for a sit-down meal, so 30 people can eat at tables in the function room, with the bar for arrivals. Tell us your number when you enquire and we will tell you how the room would be set for it.

Where do we give notice of marriage in Bournemouth?

At a BCP Council register office, by appointment booked through the council. Bournemouth's register office is at the BCP Civic Centre on Bourne Avenue. Notice is given within 12 months of the ceremony and no later than 29 days before it, after living in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole for the past 7 full days.

Do we both have to live in Bournemouth to give notice there?

No. BCP Council says partners who live in different registration districts give notice separately, each in their own district. Whoever gives notice in the BCP area must have lived there for the past 7 full days.

How far ahead should we book a small wedding?

Plan on booking a year or more ahead where you can. A deposit secures the date, a further payment falls six months out and the balance six weeks before the day. Notice of marriage cannot be given more than 12 months ahead, so book the room first and give notice once your date is inside that window.

What does a small wedding cost here?

Your quote is built from your date, your guest number and what you would like to eat and drink, so there is no price list to read off. Tell us those three when you enquire and we will give you a tailored quote.
